Wales introduces BAME history in its national curriculum
Wales has become the first nation in the UK to mandate Black history lessons across its national curriculum. This means all learning areas will need to reflect the diverse experiences and contributions of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and individuals, in both the past and present Wales. This is a huge step towards inspiring a generation of informed young people, and fostering social cohesion among them. A spokesperson for the Welsh government said,
“In order to progress as a society, our education system must broaden our understanding and knowledge of the many cultures which have built our past and present.”
One of the key aims of The Black Curriculum is to change the way history is taught in the UK National Curriculum so that it teaches all children about Black British history, all year round. We are pleased to see this important milestone being achieved. The Welsh Government has taken an important step forward and is further evidence of the growing need and demand for The Black Curriculum.
This news comes just before Black History Month, which takes place throughout October. We want to commend the Welsh Government for believing that learning about Black British history should not be limited to just one month in the year, it should be taught 365 days of the year.
At The Black Curriculum we teach about Black British History all year round. We have a wealth of resources, products, services and experience in teaching Black British history. For further enquiries and to discuss how we could work together, please contact communications@theblackcurriculum.com
